Start with duty cycle, not indoor defaults
Describe vibration profiles, shock events, flex zones at doors and articulations, temperature extremes, water spray or wash-down, and fluid exposure (fuels, oils, coolants, de-icing agents where relevant). Materials, flame and fluid resistance
Where transport regulations or customer specifications mandate flame, smoke or toxicity performance, those requirements must appear on wire and jacket callouts. Do not assume a general-purpose PVC loom meets them. Where such rules do not apply, still choose abrasion and temperature classes that match the bay or underbody location.
Fluid resistance should name the fluids. “Automotive grade” without references produces inconsistent interpretations between design, purchasing and manufacturing partners.
Abrasion sleeves, convoluted tubing, textile wrap and clamps should be specified at wear points identified in routing reviews — hinge lines, frame pass-throughs, near rotating equipment. Leaving protection to “installer judgement” guarantees variation across vehicles.
Connectors, sealing and retention
Prefer connector families suited to mobile environments, with sealing and latch robustness appropriate to weather or wash-down. Document secondary locks, pin retention requirements and cavity plug usage. Incomplete insertion is a classic intermittent fault source on vibrating structures.
Strain relief at connectors is non-negotiable. Show clamps, boots or overmoulds on the drawing. A sealed connector without strain relief still fails when the harness resonates.
Keying plans across a vehicle or consist reduce mismates during maintenance. Colour alone is not enough when multiple similar shells sit in one bay.

Branch order, tape schemes and breakout angles should support build sequence on a form board. Geometry that looks tidy in CAD but fights lacing and test access creates rework. Involve manufacturing feedback while brackets are still movable.
Slack strategy must allow assembly variation and thermal movement without leaving loops that chafe. Too little slack tears connectors; too much invites abrasion and snag points.
Validation, inspection and change control
First article inspection should include formed geometry checks against the vehicle or a representative fixture, not only electrical tests on a bench. Pull-to-seat checks, connector audits and retention verification help catch intermittent risks from incomplete pin insertion.
Electrical test coverage should include shorts and miswires across complex multi-branch looms; fixtures pay for themselves when cavity counts rise. Define how repairs re-enter test.
Change control is critical when chassis or body suppliers revise bracket locations. Harness ECOs should follow structure changes deliberately, with board and fixture updates in the same package. Shipping mixed geometry revisions into a vehicle line creates silent install defects.
Labelling, service and spare strategy
Labels must survive abrasion, fluids and cleaning. Circuit IDs should match service documentation used by technicians who did not build the vehicle. Consider whether harnesses are replaced as modules or repaired in the field; that choice affects how you segment drawings and spare kits.
Spare harness strategy should account for long-lead connectors and sealed accessories. Transportation programmes often run for years; obsolescence management on connector families belongs in the AVL conversation early.
Where platforms relate to charging or electrified auxiliaries, keep environmental and flex requirements aligned with those subsystems rather than inventing a second, conflicting practice.
Supply through manufacturing partners
Ask how form boards are maintained, how ECOs propagate to boards and test scripts, and how geometry is verified at FAI. Capacity planning should distinguish prototype vehicles, pilot fleets and serial rates.
