Start with identity: title block, revision and status
Read the part number, title, revision, sheet count and approval status before interpreting geometry. Confirm you have every sheet — cavity maps and notes often live on sheet 2 or 3. Check whether the drawing is preliminary, released or obsolete. Quoting an obsolete revision is a common and expensive failure mode.
Note referenced documents: wiring lists, label specs, customer standards, AVL lists. Those references are part of the product definition even when they are not redrawn on the assembly sheet. If a reference is missing from the RFQ zip file, stop and obtain it rather than assuming.
Unit systems and third-angle versus first-angle projection matter for orientation views. European and US drawing conventions differ; do not infer connector rotation from habit. When in doubt, ask for a keyed photograph tied to a view callout — as clarification, not as a dimension source.
Lengths, breakouts and measurement intent
Find overall length, breakout lengths and strip dimensions. Read the associated notes for measurement method: from connector face, from strain-relief exit, along centreline, under tension or after forming. Soft goods change length with handling; the note tells you which state is contractual.
Tolerances deserve scepticism when they are tighter than function requires. Flag ± values that will drive scrap on jacketed cable and ask engineering whether a functional envelope is acceptable. Conversely, do not relax critical interface lengths without a formal ECO — panel-to-panel spans may be tight for good reason.
Breakout angles and branch points on harness drawings define forming, not decoration. If the drawing shows a board grid or datum, lengths are likely to be verified on that board. RFQs that ignore board references understate the work.

Connectors, orientations and cavity maps
Match connector part numbers on the drawing to the BOM. Read keying, clocking and view arrows carefully — a 180° error is still a common escape. Backshells, strain reliefs and seals shown in views must appear as BOM lines; if they do not, raise a discrepancy before quoting.
Cavity maps should align with the schematic and with wire colours or unique IDs. When maps are incomplete, pin insertion becomes operator tribal knowledge. For multi-way connectors, confirm whether unused cavities require plugs for sealing or EMI.
Mating connector references on the drawing help install intent but can confuse purchasing if taken as BOM items. Read carefully what is supplied versus what is interface definition only.
Wire tables, materials and shield notes
Wire tables list gauge, colour, insulation type and sometimes length per circuit. Cross-check totals against cut lists implied by the geometry. Shield treatment notes — drain wire length, pigtail versus 360° clamp, heat-shrink type — are easy to miss in crowded notes blocks and expensive to discover at FAI.
Material callouts for tape, braid, conduit and tubing include coverage rules. “Tape as required” is not inspectable; prefer stated overlap or coverage. Where multiple protection layers stack, read the order of application.
If the BOM allows alternates, read the AVL hierarchy. Primary and alternate manufacturers may be listed; “or equivalent” without criteria is a red flag for procurement to resolve before award.
Notes blocks, flag notes and quality callouts
General notes often carry the real acceptance criteria: IPC/WHMA class references, cleanliness, marking, packaging and prohibited practices (e.g. certain splice types). Flag notes tied to balloons point to local requirements that override general practice. Read both.
Test callouts may appear as notes rather than as a separate specification. Continuity, hipot voltages and shield checks mentioned on the drawing are contractual unless a higher-level quality document supersedes them — and that supersession must be explicit in the RFQ.
Torque, adhesive and cure notes for backshells or overmould primers are process-critical. If your manufacturing partner will build the part, these notes decide work instructions. Do not treat them as optional commentary.
BOM reconciliation and discrepancy handling
Walk every ballooned item to a BOM line and every BOM line to a view or note. Orphans in either direction are drawing errors that must be fixed or formally conceded before production. Quantities on multi-end assemblies are frequent mismatch points.
When drawing and BOM disagree, do not pick the interpretation that is cheaper to build. Raise a supplier question or an engineering query. Silent resolution is how field failures inherit documentation bugs.
For kits, read the parent packing list against child drawings. Kit drawings may be simple; the risk sits in configuration. Completeness rules should be written, not inferred from a pictorial.
Using the drawing in RFQ, FAI and inspection
In RFQs, restate the revision and list questions against ambiguous notes. In FAI, build an inspection plan that mirrors drawing characteristics: dimensions, orientations, labels, crimps and tests. In serial inspection, keep the same interpretation locked — training operators from tribal knowledge instead of the drawing recreates revision drift.
When ECOs arrive, read the change description against every affected sheet, BOM line and referenced document. Partial updates are common. Confirm whether fixtures and test scripts remain valid.
